Someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, loads of energy and a love of meeting new people.
What It Is
Think Avon or Mary Kay—you organize get-togethers to sell a company's wares, whether those are bath products, gardening supplies, books or wine. Over time, you build a base of clients.
How To Get It
You can apply directly through the companies, such as Stella & Dot, a jewelry company that had over $100 million in sales in 2010. A few other good ones include Silpada (jewelry), The Pampered Chef (kitchenware) and Dove Chocolate Discoveries. You can also visit the Direct Selling Association website at DirectSelling411.org—all the companies listed there agree to abide by a code of ethics, so they only offer legitimate opportunities. Typically reps make a small investment to get started (this is a legitimate and standard practice), and sometimes pay a fee for the merchandise being sold. After that you can work as much or as little as you want, and see profit based on how much you sell.

How to work more efficiently from home...
Summer is in full swing, and your kids are happily in camp or day care. You’ve restored your daily workflow, but are you truly working at maximum efficiency? Here are some ways to stay cool, keep your career optimized and keep your workflow, well, flowing.
Plan your day. You need to have a game plan (and in this case, a day plan) if you plan to get work done. Without the structure that a plan provides, your day can get eaten up checking email, IM-ing a coworker—and let’s face it, lots of Twitter time. It doesn’t matter if you choose to create your plan at the end of the previous workday, or before you clock in for today. In either case, you’ll need a plan written out with your top goals for the day, and tentative deadlines for each task.
Group “like” items. You like to check email every time you hear that little “ding.” You’ll waste more time answering emails sporadically than if you set aside dedicated time to answer them all. Ditto for other job-related tasks like creating expense reports or transcribing documents. So batch your tasks according to type, and focus your time to complete each one in order to finish them faster.
Avoid distractions. Sure, your kid looks cute coming in from camp with her adorable Dora the Explorer bikini on. But chatting up your kids can interrupt your work groove—unless you already have it penciled in. If you know that your kids get off the bus at 4:00, then carve out ½ hour for that time each day to play catch up. That way, you’ll not only get time to connect with your kids, but you’ll also have a work schedule that you can stick to afterwards.
Finish what you start. You might be a multitasking maven, but starting ten projects before 10 AM can cause a chaotic workday. Instead, focus on starting—and completing—one project at a time. You’ll have a greater sense of satisfaction when you can cross items off of your to-do list and know that you’re getting a lot of work done.
Structure activities with energy levels. You may be a morning person, or you might have your energy peak at 3:00 PM. So try to coordinate more time consuming for the times when you are at your best, and you’ll be performing those tougher tasks with ease.
Take a break. It seems counterintuitive—and crazy—to take a break when you’re trying to pack as much into the day as possible. But that’s not what a productive workflow is about. Your workflow should represent quality, not quantity. So take a break by stretching your legs or taking the woofie for a walk. It will not only help give yourself a much-needed break, but it can also help your productivity soar when you return to your desk.
Working from home is wonderful, but it comes with its own set of challenges. No matter what the season, it’s easy to be productive…when you know how to work it!

Work at home scams, good tips on how 'not' to be victim...
Want to work from home or make some extra money? Ads for work-at-home opportunities may appeal to you. But before you send in any money in response to an offer, check it out. Fraudulent promoters use the classifieds and the Internet to tout all kinds of work-at-home offers, from medical billing and envelope stuffing to assembly and craft work. Too often, these ads make promises about earnings, merchandise, or marketability that sound great, but aren’t truthful. The result: consumers can get ripped off.
You also might want to check out the company with your local consumer protection agency, state Attorney General’s Office, and the Better Business Bureau, not only where the company is located, but also where you live. These organizations can tell you whether people have lodged complaints about the work-at-home program that interests you. But be wary: the absence of complaints doesn’t necessarily mean the company is legitimate. Unscrupulous companies may settle complaints, change their names, or move to avoid detection.
To Do
If you’re thinking about following up on a work-at-home offer, do your homework. Here are some questions to ask:- What tasks will I be doing? Ask the program sponsor to list every step of the job.
- Will I be paid a salary or will my pay be based on commission?
- Who will pay me?
- When will I get my first paycheck?
- What is this going to cost me, including supplies, equipment and membership fees? What do I get for my money?

Working at Home Doesn't Change the Fact You are the Stay at Home Parent
At the same time I don't want to pretend that working at home is all you're going to do if you have kids at home. You're taking care of them too. It makes doing your work more challenging, but the rewards are amazing.
I believe that parents should support each other. It doesn't matter who works at home, who stays home with the kids or who works outside the home. What matters is that we all care for our families.
It's just that some of us are lucky enough to be working toward our dreams.
Deciding to be a stay at home mom or dad doesn't usually mean you've given up on your ambitions. There's no reason to do so, not with the amazing opportunities out there. But there's also nothing wrong with delaying the pursuit of your ambitions while you raise your family. And nothing wrong with combining the two.
Somehow most of us make it work no matter what we do. Don't let the naysayers get you down about the choices you make.

10 Best (and Real) Work from Home Jobs
Consider these 10 jobs -- some rather traditional and others unexpected -- for interesting at-home work and good (if competitive) prospects.
Virtual assistant
This is a field with much potential, in part because the title description covers many things. "You can fit your offerings to what you know how to do," says Foster. One can own a virtual assistant business or work from home for a company that makes you available to other employees or clients. Homewiththekids.com, for example, currently features a dozen such companies. Small businesses hire virtual assistants to help when they can't justify a permanent employee. The International Virtual Assistants Association, which Durst co-founded in the 1990s, began with 28 members and has grown to more than 600, who charge from $15 per hour to more than $100 per hour.

Medical transcriptionist
As Foster knows, being a medical receptionist is a demanding job, and nearly every company listed on her site seeks applicants with experience and/or training from certain schools. The work involves listening to and typing up dictation from doctors -- some of whom have difficult accents, slur words together, and even "eat, drink, chew gum (and) talk to other people in the room" while dictating, she says. But hearing about medical matters can be interesting, and good transcriptionists are in very high demand. Expect initial earnings of less than $10 per hour, but some transcriptionists earn $20 or more per hour.
Translator
Those with fluency in more than one language translate audio files or documents, not just word for word but often with cultural differences in mind. "Companies can access home-based translators with hard-to-find language skills without being held back by geographic location," says Fell.
Foster's site lists 15 companies that seek home-based translators. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-09, which groups translators and interpreters, notes a projected employment increase of 24 percent over the 2006-to-2016 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations. The national mean hourly wage for translators and interpreters was $20.74, with a mean annual wage of $43,130 as of May 2008, according to estimates by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some industries pay significantly higher, with the highest paying jobs generally in the management, scientific and technical consulting services areas, in which the mean hourly wage was $56.50 and the annual mean wage was $117,530.
Web developer/designer
Information technology is the sector, Durst says, where most of the home-based hiring is being done. Terri Orlowski, a virtual assistant and Web developer based in Ledyard, Conn., offers services such as custom Web site design, template modification and redesigns, code updates, hosting, and usability reviews. She previously held administrative positions in a variety of industries, and makes a higher per-hour rate now. The job is in high demand. Of the more than 15,000 new monthly work-from-home job postings on Odesk.com, Web developers are in the greatest demand, says spokeswoman Elizabeth Gordon. A list of companies that post at-home tech jobs is available at ratracerebellion.com.
Call center representative
When you phone to order something from a catalog or infomercial, a big office with rows of cubicles may come to mind. But the person on the other end of the line is likely to be sitting in a home office. "It's a huge and growing industry," says Durst of companies that hire independent contractors to take calls from home. She says the "home-shore movement" started in response to complaints about the many companies that looked offshore for workers. While some Web sites, such as Alpineaccess.com, actually hire representatives, most use subcontractors. Just be aware that the pay may be by the minute rather than by the hour, so you may not be paid for time you spend waiting by the phone. A list of companies that hire call center reps can be found at Homewiththekids.com.
Tech support specialist
Call centers also hire technical support specialists to work remotely. Kate Lister, co-author of "Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home," names it as one of her top three "best-bet work-at-home jobs." And according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, jobs for computer support specialists (on-site and remote combined) were expected to increase by 13 percent from 2006 to 2016 -- much faster than the average for all occupations -- with 71,000 new jobs.

Scams abound in the travel industry -- particularly organizations that charge for information on how to break into the field. But operating a home-based travel agency can be an excellent business, says Tom Ogg of the Home Based Travel Agent Information Center. "Real home-based travel agents have experienced robust growth over the last decade, and there are probably around 35,000 of them and growing." A growing (although small) number of people earn $100,000 or more a year, he says. "A solid business concept and plan focused on profitability will take you a long way to achieving your monetary goals." There's also the joy of helping others enjoy their leisure time.
Teacher
From postsecondary education to elementary schools, there are opportunities for students to learn virtually. Along with that, come opportunities to teach (and tutor) virtually. While distance learning is not new, advanced technology, collaborative multimedia software designed for schools and high-speed Internet connections have created more opportunities for teachers and students to work together from afar, says Fell. Durst has also noticed more teacher jobs being posted, and she knows of one professor who works mainly online and makes six figures -- although income "depends on how many hours you're applying to it and the type of classes you're teaching." A resource center for online teaching jobs can be found at GetEducated.com.
Writer/editor
Yes, the print publishing industry has been suffering, but Durst is seeing frequent listings these days for writing, editing and proofreading, particularly for the Web. Even those without writing experience can join the blogosphere. Not only can blogging be lots of fun, Foster says, but also there's money to be earned blogging for someone else's site, getting paid to post on your own blog or through revenue-sharing arrangements.
It's a no-brainer: Owning a business can be the road to at-home work. For an initial investment, franchises may offer a ready-made business with brand awareness, a system and a territory, says Leslie Truex, founder of the Web site Work-At-Home Success. She advises considering businesses that target the over-50 crowd or the self-employed, involve health and wellness, relate to the "green" movement, or involve electronic or online devices (i.e., accessories, applications).

Real Work At Home Jobs...
Are there real work at home jobs? Yes there are some, but, they are not nearly as plentiful as you would think considering the amount of interest there is in working from home. They are also difficult to find.
Finding work at home employment isn't easy. Despite all the online advertising you see, there aren't that many legimate work at home jobs. In fact, there are more scams than real work from home opportunities. Here's how to find work at home employment, research work at home opportunities to make sure they are legitimate and avoid scams. Work at Home Job Listings There are companies that hire for work from home jobs and you can find work at home job listings online. Job seekers who are interested in home employment need to spend a good deal of time searching for legitimate opportunities, as well as a significant amount of time weeding through scams.
Getting Started Working at Home
Many people who work from home started out working in an office, but, were able to arrange with their employer to work some or all of time at home. I have an acquaintance who relocated to Washington, DC. Her employer decided to enable her to work from home, rather than losing a valuable employee. I have another acquaintance who works part-time from the office and part-time from home in order to accommodate her child's school schedule. My sister-in-law schedules home nursing care visits from home. In those cases, employees, who had already proven themselves to be valuable to their employer, were able to negotiate flexible work schedules.
Companies That Hire Work From Home Employees
There are companies that hire employees directly to work from their homes. Check the sites that list work at home jobs. Some of these positions are those where you cover a territory, for an insurance company or a consumer products firm, for example, and spend some time on the road and some time in your home office. There are also customer service, recruiting, sales, scheduling, technical, writing, and telemarketing jobs available. In many cases, the jobs are part-time, commission-based, or pay a lump sum for a completed project.
In other cases, you can work as a home based agent where you are an employee of the company who works from a home office, providing customer service to client companies. Virtual assistants provide administrative, secretarial, and clerical support, as well as creative and/or technical services for clients.
Work at home transcriptionists are usually independent contractors who transcribe and edit recorded reports onto their home computer. Online tutors work for internet based companies that offer help, within a variety of subject areas, to students of all ages.
If you're looking to make a little extra money, paid surveys are a possibility, but do be careful about avoiding scams.
Full-time jobs that provide health insurance, a pension, vacation, and other benefits while you work full-time from home, especially if you don't have experience, are few and far between. Finding them online is a little like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Be Flexible Flexibility is one key to successfully working from home. If you are willing to consider freelance or contract employment or willing to combine a couple of part-time positions, you'll have a greater chance of success in finding opportunities that are legitimate. It's also critically important to take the time to search for positions and to thoroughly research those that sound viable.
